What is Play Therapy ?
What is Play Therapy?
Most of the time when adults face a difficulty, they use spoken language to help them make sense of their situation. Often children are not able to use language alone to help them process difficult times. Using the language of play is a much more effective approach.
Play Therapy provides a safe space for children to make sense of their life experiences. It aims to empower children by helping them acknowledge their feelings constructively and give them strategies for coping with the difficulties they face. It is suitable for children aged between 3 years to 11 years.
Who would benefit from Play Therapy?
Children who have had traumatic life experiences, including Bereavement or family break-ups.
Adopted or fostered children.
Children who suffer from anxiety, emotional-based school avoidance, stress or phobias.
Children who have difficulties managing their emotions or have low self-esteem.
Sessions
Play Therapy sessions occur weekly at a consistent time and in a confidential place. Most importantly the therapist builds a rapport with the child. Each session lasts 40 minutes. The room will contain a range of resources for the child to choose from including a sand tray, miniatures, clay, arts and crafts materials, Musical instruments, games and puppets. The sessions are non-directive, the child chooses which resources to use, and the therapist supports and reflects when appropriate. Children need a minimum of 12 sessions.
